Children and subliminal messages in the media is the cause of these changes in kids that continue thought teenagers, in a way that they became more violent and addictive. The word subliminal literally means “below the luminal, or beneath perception. For a subliminal message to work, they must be perceived at some level, and so a better definition might be “below the threshold of consciousness”. Subliminal messaging therefore refers to the act of sending messages directly to the subconscious mind. Sociality stereotypes are portrayed by the media to influence children.
The media and their messages bring mental and psychological effects on the children. There is a lot of influence around a child since this is born; the media plays an important role in their lives. The cartoons are present and for many years it has become a primary action to their way of live. This issue of children and subliminal messages in media is not a new problem and is more than just subliminal messages is the effect that this addiction bring along with; “The children who watch too much cartoons on television are more likely to have mental and emotional problems, along with brain and eye injuries and unexpectedly the risk of a physical problem increases”. (Hossler, 2004) this illustrates that when a child is expose to the TV for an increases amount of time the effect will affect not only the way may think but also the child’s health. According to research done “Mental and Psychological Effects on Children who Watch Cartoons From the time children start school to the time that they graduate they are averaged to spend around 13,000 hours in school. This may seem like an awful lot of hours to attend school unless it is compared to the hours a child watches television, which is nearly 18,000 hours (from the time school is started to the time of graduation). This comparison is an outrage because of the amount of television that is watched by a child will have an effect on their brain, emotions and their sense to feel pain.” This shows that the way media make a child addictive to it, is also making the child suffer of pain for accumulated hours of receiving messages in their cartoons.
The issue of subliminal messages is not a new problem it have been for years since media start is a threat to society, children. The TV’s effect on children’s behavior is what still worries a lot of people. People complain that certain TV shows are having negative effects on their children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) both feel that TV does influence the behavior of children as young as one year old. From their studies, the AACAP states, “Children who view shows in which violence is very realistic, frequently repeated or unpunished, are more likely to imitate what they see.” This is something of worry because as a child you do not know what is right and what is wrong, their mindsets are just focus on how to control their bodies and minds, and they see everything normal. That is why the parents play a very important role in their lives since they born because is up to their parents to allow the child to see certain things that might affect their way of think, an example is when on cartoon they see a character or actor that was shot but not been harmed, but would actually be seriously injured, or can die in real life. also since little kids the parents must tell the children that violence is not a way to resolve a conflict, because they might be a trauma or a negative effect on children that we do not want to see. The mind of a child is like a sponge, the AAP states “Neuroscientists have shown that environmental experiences significantly shape the developing brain.” This again adds to the idea that young children are very impressionable. They paid more attention to the effect of TV on children in their daily lives. People need to be very careful to what they are letting their child to watch. New research suggests that the children in Japan who suffered epileptic seizures after watching a popular Japanese TV cartoon in 1997 would have probably developed seizures; this was something that was put on experiments. “In an incident that drew worldwide attention in December 1997, many children and some adults in Japan who were watching the popular television cartoon Pokémon ("Pocket Monster") had epileptic seizures. The study showed that among children with epilepsy, those who had seizures within the previous year or those who had a form of epilepsy triggered by flashing lights or flickering patterns were more like to suffer repeat seizures after the "Pocket Monster" event.” (Warner, 2004) This illustrates that the effects that the media give to the children can turn to be in serious problems and it can go to the extreme and very negative. The effects that subliminal messages can have on the children are of violence, health problems and their behavior ruined.
Over the years the company Disney have been accuse of this subliminal messages; the visual subliminal messaging in children’s cartoons. Whilst Disney let many hidden messages go unchallenged in the cinema, however as controversy built and the messages were found by the public they had to remove some of them for VHS and DVD releases. It is difficult to say which Disney films contain subliminal messages hidden. Some of them that have been shown to have are: The Rescuers features two frames of an actual topless model. They are in the scene when Bernard and Bianca fly through the city you can briefly see her in a window in the background if you freeze the frame a naked woman. Framed Roger RabbitThere is a distinctly shot of Jessica Rabbit jumping out of a Taxi -and the subliminal image only lasts a couple of frames – but her skirt is open and it shows a nude woman’s legs open for just a second. Also later in the film the home phone number of Disney Chief Executive Michael Eisner appears on a wall – but this has apparently been edited out of modern DVD releases. Aladdin: On the scene where Aladdin is trying to reach Jasmine outside her balcony you can hear Aladdin say “Good teenagers take off your clothes” quite quickly. The Lion King, in the scene where Simba remembers his father on a cliff top the word “SEX” is formed in the clouds above his head. This is only the tip of the iceberg though in the Lion king subliminal saga – there are countless examples, hidden in the background, the animation, the word sex appears in nearly every scene – all subliminally of course – but to the trained eye they can be found. Pocahontas, There are references to the word “Sex” all throughout this movie; it can be seen spelled out in a lot of the background images all throughout the movie. (The official subliminal messages blog, 2009). This is very important because it has not being a recent problem and Disney is a very powerful company and famous that children love and enjoy watching and play with all the products that Disney made.
All this is done for a purpose, sell, have money and be powerful. The way that the companies that produce children’s cartoon work is not be make happy at the children, is to make happy at their wallet. “Children are no longer viewed as vulnerable human beings that need to be nurtured. Nowadays, companies are increasingly viewing kids through an economic lens. This is because children are easy to take advantage of. A child will see an item that they want and will throw a complete tantrum until their parents give up and purchase it. This is a marketing company’s dream come true.” (Nelson, 2004) Media play with the children and influenced them to be like the company says so the parents can buy and Disney can turn more powerful. “The market for children’s products and food is enormous. Parents on the one hand have a hard time raising children the way they want to, while on the other hand, kids are being increasingly influenced by commercialism that often goes against what parents are trying to do.” (Shah, 2010) the companies get everywhere one goes. Are their job, and the people as consumers to follow and be like they want the people to be.
This issue matter because the way media portray their work make the children think in a certain way and they grow up thinking that what is put on cartoons or on media itself is the correct way to achieve their goals. Also I personally grow thinking on the princess and on having and being a certain way. Also they make me belief that let everything happen to me I will at the end marry a rich men and my body and skin color need to be certain way. The subliminal messages in media do not benefit the children, they do the whole opposite.
